For Mrs. Kopelman, two things are important in a marriage: compromise and trust. Drew Barrymore opened up to Us Weekly in an exclusive new interview about life with her husband, Will Kopelman, and their adorable daughters, Olive, 3, and Frankie, 18 months.
The Miss You Already actress, 40, who often works from coast to coast, landed in NYC on Thursday, Nov. 12, for her Shutterfly Holiday Gift Unveiling at the Hudson Hotel Penthouse. At the holiday event, she told Us that the tiniest compromises in pressure-cooker situations, like traveling, are key to a healthy relationship.
"I think a good place to start is when a significant other points things out that are tough for them and they are things that you're willing to change in your life," Barrymore said. "If you really said, 'Why am I fighting for this?' Start with those. My husband used to tell me, 'I hate that we're always racing to the airport. It's like an anxiety attack.' And I thought, 'Yeah, why am I fighting for that?' I don't like anxiety, so now I pack the night before."
"My husband and I compromise on a lot of things like that, it's the little things that you can change that can make the relationship stronger," she continued. "Compromise is about changing yourself for the better, it's an opportunity for you to become a more functional, better person."
Barrymore and the art consultant, 38, began dating in February 2011 and married at the actress' Montecito, Calif., estate in June 2012. After four years together, the couple knows "how to lay off each other's buttons."
"We know each other very well and know what our likes and dislikes are and what works and doesn't work. Small things like rushing to the airport can be some else's nightmare and we have to change for the better to grow as a couple," Barrymore said. In addition, she noted that trust and the "acceptance of the entire being of another person" is important.
The CEO of Flower Beauty cosmetics wore her heart on her sleeve at Thursday night's festivities. During her speech, she also said that everyone goes through dark moments, but "that's the balance of life. The agony and the ecstasy - that's the seesaw we're all on." That's perhaps why she especially loves the "joy" in her life. And her children Olive and Frankie have a lot to do with that.
"They're all great, my kids are so amazing, my husband is great," she gushed. "The kids are my whole world, my universe, my everything."
