Serials Adnan Syed is getting a second chance to clear his name.
On Friday, Maryland granted Syeds motion to reopen his 2000 case in the murder his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Syed, 34, was convicted and is currently serving a life sentence. The new hearing will allow potential alibi witness Asia McClain to testify in his defense.
As fans of the podcast are well aware, McClain maintains she saw Syed at their high school during the time frame when prosecutors said he murdered Lee. McClain claimed that she was never called upon to testify, and last year, she filed another affidavit claiming that prosecutor Kevin Urich convinced her not to take the stand.
After listening to Sarah Koenigs podcast, McClain stated in her affidavit, "I realized I needed to step forward and make my story known to the court system."
McClain will now get the chance to testify in Syeds defense and, according to Vulture, the hearing will argue around the cell-tower evidence that was used to convict Syed. Syeds lawyer had previously argued that the call logs are not reliable evidence.
